Over the span of four decades, Charlie Rich recorded a body of work that is as unique in American music as it is daunting. Where does the fan or the casual listener begin? His rockabilly recordings at Sun in the 50’s and early 60’s? Or, how about the rhythm and blues he recorded at the legendary Hi studio in Memphis? Then again, maybe you prefer gospel, or blues, or possibly jazz.

Charlie left behind an amazingly varied output of classic recordings, especially when one considers that Charlie is best known as a bona fide giant in the field of country music.

Until recently, many of Charlie’s greatest recordings were either out-of-print or issued on hard-to-find labels. That’s all changed. Now, most of Charlie’s recordings—the Smash recordings not withstanding— are available on CD in an array of original albums and top-shelf greatest hits packages.

To help you through the confusing offerings you’re likely to encounter, we’ d like to recommend those CDs we believe to be the cream of the crop. A very rich crop indeed.
